The RPSI's 171 for 171 Railtour
On Saturday 21st April 2012 the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland operated the 171 for 171 Railtour. An unusual name you may say but there is a very good reason for it.
The aim of the tour was to raise funds for the RPSI’s 171 Slieve Gullion. Instead of the more normal railtour departure point of Dublin Connolly, or even Dublin Heuston it was realised that the mileage from Dublin Pearse to Cork was 171 miles. A perfect marketing opportunity that couldn’t be missed. 171 miles to raise funds for No. 171.
The other main attraction of this tour was the Non Stop run on the return journey from Cork to Dublin Pearse. While the run up from Cork to the Dublin Commuter Belt shouldn’t pose a problem getting from Glasnevin Jct, through Connolly and across the loop line to Pearse was going to be interesting. Did they manage it….the answer is in the pictures!
As always, it was a wonderful day out. Thanks to the RPSI and IE staff involved on the day and also a special thanks to Finnyus for providing road transport around North Cork during the first
part of the day.
