Due to the failure of the 1800 Heuston - Cork at Mallow the previous night, there was no spare loco available to replace it, 219 was in Cork but due to faults with that it wasn't permitted to replace 216 on the MKIV set.
To provide a set for the 0800 Mallow - Cork and 0925 Cork - Heuston, Cork used 22041 which was allocated to the 0625 Cork - Tralee service. 22041 was sent back to Cork on the 1300 Heuston - Cork service and it was pictured passing Ratheven outside Portlaoise. It would then be placed back on its diagram working the 2055 Cork - Tralee service.
223 which had come from Inchicore that morning and MKIV set 4003 worked the 1625 Cork - Heuston.
2601 + 2602 + 2607 + 2608 were used for the 0625 Cork - Tralee service and stayed on the Tralee line until the 1705 Tralee - Cork working the 0905 & 1305 Tralee - Mallow, 1120 & 1520 Mallow - Tralee services in the meantime. They then went to Limerick later that evening for their 14 day interval B Exam. Wed 03.01.18
