The Wolfhill Branch
The Wolfhill Branch was a 9 mile railway from Athy that was built by the British Government after the World War 1 to access the Coalfield at Wolfhill. The railway opened on 24th September 1918 passing through a single Village of Ballylinan en-route.
The railway to the coalmine didn't last long with it closing between Ballylinan and Wolfhill in 1929. The Athy - Ballylinan section survived until April 1963 with its main traffic being the seasonal Beet Trains to Carlow.
A short section survived in Athy to serve the Tegral factory with Cement Trains from Limerick. This traffic ceased in 2005 when it went over to road haulage and the remaining section now lies disused. Occasionally, a Freight or PWD train may be stabled on the section bewteen Athy and the Carlow Road Level Crossing (1/4 Milepost).
This gallery has pictures from a walk of the "Tegral Siding" as it is now known from August 2012, while the Wolfhill - Ballylian section pictures are from April 2015.
