UK Trip: Friday 10th December 2021
After a night in the Cardiff Valleys I got dropped off at Pontyclun Station to catch a train into Cardiff Central from where I would head into London. The connection at Cardiff turned out to be rather tight due to late running and arriving onto the dreaded platform 0 at Cardiff Central which is not convenient for the other platforms in the station.
After being whizzed to London in an IEP, I dumped the bags in left luggage and headed underground to explore the newest part of the London Underground, the Northern Line extension to Battersea Power Station.
Once that was complete and still with time to kill before I had to head north, I ventured to Waterloo to travel on some Class 455's out as far as Wimbledon, however the first part of the trip was on a Class 707 to Vauxhall, these are being gradually transferred to South Eastern and to me become the next generation version of the Class 508's which spent a few years in the early 1980's on the Waterloo routes before heading to Merseyrail in Liverpool.
After getting some images at Vauxhall and Earlsfield I arrived at Wimbledon and heading back to London on the District Line, making a brief stop at Southfields. Once back at Paddington, I collected the luggage and headed to Marylebone to get the 1714 to Kidderminster, which was class 68 hauled.
Less than two hours later I alighted at Birmingham Snow Hill and made the short walk to New Street to get a AW service to Crewe for an TfW service to Holyhead which would arrve just after midnight for my 0215 hrs sailing to Dublin.
While enroute to Holyhead, I got a text from Stena Line saying that my 0215 sailing was delayed by 3 hours, 30 minutes later the sailing was cancelled. A hasty plan B ws hatched to stay in the nearby Travelodge at Holyhead for the night and I travelled on the 0900 sailing the following day, which was delayed to 11115, making me 9 hours late in total. A nice way to end the trip!
