Pelletstown - opened Sunday 26th September 2021
The new station on the Maynooth/M3 Parkway to Dublin line, is the 145th station on the Iarnród Éireann network
Pelletstown, the newest station on the Iarnród Éireann network, will open to the communities of Ashington and Royal Canal Park in Dublin on Sunday 26th September.
The Station is funded by the National Transport Authority and levies collected by Dublin City Council from the new development at Royal Canal Park, and has been constructed by Sisk on behalf of Iarnród Éireann. Pelletstown was designated as a “Key Development Area” in the Dublin City Council Development Plan.
Pelletstown Station is situated between Ashtown and Broombridge stations on the Dublin to Maynooth/M3 Parkway line. It will serve the existing community of Ashington as well as the new community at Royal Canal Park, with a journey time of as little as 12 minutes from the city centre, served by 94 trains daily in total (weekdays).
The Station will comprise of two platforms, a footbridge and accessible ramp access between platforms and to the railway, as well as a second footbridge and accessible ramp over the canal. It will promote greater public transport options for residents in the area, reducing reliance on the private car and giving a more sustainable commuting option for the community.
The footbridges will improve connectivity between the two communities of Ashington and Royal Canal Park and will also provide a new pedestrian and cycle access to the Canal Greenway, promoting multi modal transport. Both bridges will also include ramps for the mobility impaired and those travelling with small children and heavy luggage. Bicycle parking will be provided, as well as dedicated accessible car park spaces, adjacent to Ashington Park.
The first train to serve the station was the 0807 Maynooth - Connolly, formed of 4ICR set 22021. A large number of people turned out to witness the first service and travel on it towards the Dublin City Centre. The 2nd train to call was the 0845 Connolly - Maynooth formed of 29019.
At 1000, a photo op and media interviews took place with the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan being joined by the four Dublin West TD's, Jack Chambers, Paul Donnelly, Roderic O'Gorman & Leo Varadkar to officially declare the station open.
