On Saturday 7th May, Iarnrod Eireann threw open the gates of Inchicore works to the public for an open day event to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the works, the first major open day since the 150th open day in 1996.

Inchicore sits within an area of 73 acres and was originally a self sufficient railway engineering site employing more than 2000 local people. The site today is a modern remanufacturing facility employing 500 staff and is the main engineering headquarters for Iarnrod Eireann. The main activity today is the repair and major overhaul of all rolling stock and locomotives for Iarnrod Eireann.

For the open day, all of the workshops were open to the public with a one way walking route around works, various locomotives, multiple units and rolling stock was positioned throughout the complex with some visiting rolling stock from Northern Ireland Railways, the RPSI and Connemara Railway Company.

The highlight of the day was the naming of B134 "Inchicore Railway Works Anniversary Year 1846 - 2021" and 071 was named "Great Southern & Western".
